Liberal Democrats in Cardiff North have ridiculed the Conservatives after details of a leaked letter emerged, hinting at a lack of support amongst Tories for their party leader.

The letter to Tory members in David Cameron's own constituency of Witney admits that the new Tory leader "may not be another Winston Churchill", and implores party members to rally around their ailing leader, saying: "We failed to support Iain Duncan Smith and we never really got behind William Hague so don't let's fall into the same trap [with David Cameron]".

Lib Dem Welsh Assembly candidate for Cardiff North, Ed Bridges, said: "If David Cameron's own constituency cronies are underwhelmed by his performance as leader, it's pretty clear that the rest of the country are hardly likely to be attracted to his party. It proves what the Lib Dems have been saying all along - the Conservatives are just full of spin and lack any real political substance."

Ed added: "While the Liberal Democrats have been unveiling strong policies on green tax and foreign affairs, the Conservatives have remained a policy-free zone. It's no wonder some of their members have no faith in their leader."
