Cracking down on public drinking: Gwilym Owen, Cllr. Michelle Michaelis and Fenella Bowden want tougher regulations on drinking in Heath Park.

Following numerous requests from local residents, Cllr. Michelle Michaelis has asked for both Heath Park and Llwynfedw Gardens to be designated 'Alcohol Control Zones'.

This will mean that police are given additional powers to request that people cease drinking alcohol in a designated area, if it is felt that there is a danger of disorderly conduct or crime occurring owing to the fact that alcohol is being consumed. The police can also confiscate drink.

Cllr. Michaelis said: "Contrary to what has been reported in some places, it does not mean that people would be unable to enjoy a bottle of wine at a quiet picnic! The legislation is meant to prevent rowdy and aggressive behaviour from escalating into violence.

Local activist, Gwilym Owen, added: "This is a sensible measure for our area. Police can already tackle underage drinking, but they need help to stop over-18s drinking irresponsibly in public places. This legislation helps them do that, and it's good to see our Focus Team helping on these important issues."
