Lib Dems say NO to New Zealand Road flats plans12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 24th Apr 2009
The Gabalfa Liberal Democrat Focus Team was horrified to learn about plans to demolish the six flats at New Zealand Road and build a new block of 40 apartments. The current red-brick large flats, situated on the corner of Whitchurch Road and New Zealand Road, have ample parking provision and plenty of green amenity space for residents. Under a new planning application submitted recently, they would be demolished and replaced by a mixture of one and two-bedroom apartments, with 37 car parking spaces provided for 40 flats. Liberal Democrat councillor, Ed Bridges, said: "I am appalled at these proposals. Our area needs more family housing and amenity space - not tiny flats with insufficient parking and no quality of life for the people crammed into them." Residents can view the plans at City Hall or can attend Cllr. Bridges' next advice surgery on Friday 8th May, 5.30-6.30pm at St. Mark's Church on North Road to see what is proposed. Your Lib Dem Team are urging residents to contact the Council with any comments they have on the application. If YOU would like to submit comments, you can e-mail them to developmentcontrol@cardiff.gov.uk or send them in writing to Development Control, City Hall, Cardiff, CF10 3ND - be sure to quote application number 09/569/W. Please also send a copy of any comments to Cllr. Ed Bridges so he can help reinforce the views of residents when he makes a submission on the application. Cardiff North's Liberal Democrat Parliamentary spokesman, John Dixon, said: "I hope that, together, we can resist these proposals. The current flats are worth retaining, and it makes little sense to build more small apartments at a time when developers are struggling to sell them."
